Dad Appears In Court Charged With Murdering His Own Son

A father has today appeared in court charged with the murder of his son. After allegedly throwing him into a river. Eleven month Zakari William Bennett-Eko died in hospital after he was found in the river Irwell, Blackburn Street, Radcliffe. The baby’s father Zak Eko 22 has been remanded in custody following a brief hearing at Manchester magistrates court this morning.

At the hearing today Mr Eko spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and that he is of no fixed abode. District Judge McDaid adjourned the case to Monday. It will be heard at Manchester Crown Court. “Mr Eko, this matter is to be dealt with at the crown court. It will be there at 9:45am or thereabouts. “In the meantime you are remanded in custody. That’s it for today,” the judge said.

Zakari was taken to the hospital but sadly died there after being retrieved from the water. Mourners have left flowers, soft toys and candles at the scene in Radcliffe, which is a small town near Bury.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear of events like this, I can’t bare to imagine the pain and anguish that the family are suffering right now. They should of been looking forward to planning his first birthday but instead they’ll have to plan his funeral. I truly hope the British justice system ensures that the man is brought to justice. I believe it should a life sentence with no parole.

Greater Manchester Police yesterday said there were a “significant number of witnesses” and they have asked people to send in photos or video clips that could assist the investigation.

Among the tributes was a large cuddly bear with a card that read: “To a beautiful little boy. Sleep tight little man. Our thoughts are with your family. From all of us at Lidl Radcliffe.”

One card with flowers read: “Goodnight and God Bless beautiful innocent boy. Fly high Angel.”
